Worship
New Testament Worship
X. The Word/Hymns Part 2
1) When the early Christians came together, one reason was to hear the Word (Acts 2:42). Although this is not worship in and of itself, it is essential because:
A) How would we know how to worship?
B) How would we know when to worship?
C) How would we know whom we worship?
D) How could we teach others to worship?
E) Where would we get our faith to worship? Rom 10:17
F) How would we have this study on worship?
(1 Cor. 16:1,2; Matt 15:9; Rom 16:17; 2 Tim 3:16,17)
2) When you turn to page 512 in the `hymn-book”, and begin singing (at least most of you do), how often do you know what you're singing? Is it an involuntary act?
Again, answer for yourself. If there is any doubt, look at the passages in question #3 and see the importance of being attentive to the words we sing.
3) Do you consider singing to be worship?
Eph. 5:18,19; Col 3:16; 1 Cor 14:15; Jn. 4:24
Eph. 5:18,19 says, to speak “to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord”. Col 3:16 also mentions “admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Notice the dual purpose in this singing: to admonish (build up, strengthen) one another (Remember Heb. 10:25?); and to offer these “from our hearts” to God! Is that not worship?
We all know that we've been commanded to pray, assemble, study, and that we have apostolic precepts to break bread and give, etc. BUT have we forgotten that we have been commanded to sing?
1 Cor. 14:15 says we are to “sing with the spirit and with the mind.” Remember Jn. 4:24 says to worship in spirit and truth? That should settle any doubts about the importance of question #2!
Other examples of singing are found in the NT. Paul and Silas sang “hymns of praise” while imprisoned (We need more songs that just praise God!) (Acts 16:25). Some believe that Eph. 5:14 and 1 Tim 3:16 are parts of early Christian songs.
4) If indeed singing is worship, what must be essential of the song we sing?
That it be scriptural, that it admonishes by showing the Lord, that it praises God, that it has a message, that we believe and offer it to one another AND God!
