VII Old Testament Worship (Part 6)
Exile Restoration
1) What happened as a result of Israel and Judah worshipping other gods and images? Hos 10:1-11:6; Amos 3:9, 5:1,2; Jer. 1:16, 2:13, 26-28; 25:1-11, 32:1-5
Hosea and Amos prophesied the fall of the northern kingdom (Israel) because of their idolatry. As did Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, Micah, Habakkuk and Zephaniah of the southern kingdom (Judah). Jeremiah specifically tells the southern kingdom that they will be taken by Babylon into captivity (25:1-11; 32: 1-5)
Hos 10:1-11:6 (2) their (Israel) heart is faithless.. the Lord will break down their altars (5).. Samaria will fear for the calf of Beth-aven..its idolatrous priests will cry out over it (8) All the high places.. will be destroyed (11:2) they kept sacrificing to Baals and burning incense to idols.
Amos 3:9 Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see the great tumults
Amos 5:1,2 She has fallen and will not rise again
Jer 1:16 I will pronounce My judgments.. they have forsaken Me and have offered sacrifices to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.
Jer 2:26-28 say to a tree, “You are my father”, and to a stone, “You gave me birth” where are your gods which you made for yourself? Let them arise if they can save you.
Jer. 25:1-11 (6) do not go after other gods.. do not provoke me to anger with the work of your hands and I will do you no harm.. (9) I will send to Neb King of Babylon and will bring them against this land.. and the nations shall serve the king of Babylon 70 years.
Jer. 32:1-5 (2) army.. of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem.
FACTS: Northern tribes taken by Assyria, led by Tilgath Pileser (few would return)
Judah taken by Neb of Babylon
Ez. 6:1-10 (v9) you who escape will remember
Zech 1:1-6 (v6) they repented
More Facts About Israel's Exile:
ISRAEL
Tilgath Pileser took the land of Naphtali: (2Kings 15:29) (Pekah killed). Shalmeneser took captive Hoshea (2 kings 17:3-6) (1Kings 17:14-17) and all of Israel (this caused a revival in the land of Judah) (721 BC?)
JUDAH
Hezekiah showed Merodach-baladen, their wealth. (Isa. 39) Judah taken captive around 606 B.C. In the 11th year of King Zedekiah, Judah was taken to Babylon with the exception of some of the poorest. (2Kings 25)
About the return:
536 B.C. King Cyrus released them (Isa. 45:1-8). 2 ½ million Jews left Egypt; only 50 thousand returned from Assyria and Babylon, mostly all but a small remnant were of Judah. Isa. 14:1-3 and others refer to the promised return.
God used evil nations to punish the Hebrews. These nations would be judged as well (Isa. 13-24)
After the _______ years of Babylonian captivity, what was the remaining Jews' attitude about idolatry? Ez 6: 3-10, Zech 1:2-6
(70 years) They remembered well the words of all the prophets who had warned them what the result of their idolatry would be. They knew that the Lord God was their only God just as He had spoken through Ezekiel that they would (Eze. 6:3-10) when He said, “You shall know that I am the Lord.” The Jews NEVER again returned to idolatry although they would deny Christ.
Who were the three main characters in rebuilding the worship of the Jews? What was each's part? First, which four Old Testament books tell of the return of the Jews to their homeland, and their being re-established?
Ezra, Nehemiah: Historically
Haggai, Zechariah: Prophetically
Now let's answer the previous questions. Zerubbabel returned first with about 50,000 to rebuild the temple (Ez. 2:2f, 5:2) Almost eighty years after Zerubbabel's return, Ezra retuned with about 2000 to revive the spiritual life of the people (Ez. 7:1f; 7:10,25; Ne. 8), and finally, Nehemiah and his workmen ventured to rebuild the wall around the city of Jerusalem (Ne. 2:17-20).
How well was the religious life and worship reinstated? Mal 4:4
Remember Ezra 7:25,26. Anyone who did not obey God's laws completely was punished severely! The returning Jews believed and were committed to the cause of re-establishing the Law of God! They now knew the results of disobedience! They no longer worshipped idols or intermarried (Ez. 9:14) which had let them into idolatry. (Ne 10: 28,29).
