WORSHIP
II. Old Testament Worship Part One
1) In studying this lesson, you're going to find it necessary to do a little w-o-r-k. So get your concordance and a Bible dictionary or at least use the helps in the back of your Bible. Ready? Where is the first account of someone `worshipping' in the Old Testament?
It was the offerings of Cain and Abel. God was pleased with Abel's offering of `worship' from the firstlings of his flock. (Gen. 4:4)
2) What is the first record of someone worshipping incorrectly?
Well, if Cain's and Abel's offerings were the first known acts of worship, then Gen 4:5, which says, “for Cain and his offering He had no regard;” must be the first record of incorrect worship. We really don't know why Cain's offering was not pleasing to God. Perhaps it wasn't the first fruits? or perhaps God had commanded an animal sacrifice? Whatever the reason, God told Cain that if he did well, his offering would also be accepted (v. 6,7)
3) Before Israel was taken into captivity by Egypt (Ex. 1:8-11), what record do we have concerning their means of worship? Be prepared to discuss these.
We've already discussed Gen. 4:1-7, Gen 4:26 says that men began to “call upon the name of the Lord” which was a way of saying `praying.' What about Noah's offering after the flood (Gen 8:20)? or Abraham's altars upon which he offered sacrifices (Gen 12:7,8, 13:18)? We also see Jacob build altars “calling upon God” (Gen 28: 18-22; 31: 54).
Abraham's prayer for the righteous is Sodom (Gen 18:23-32) was a prayer of request yet shows an attitude of humility and praise (v25), which might be considered worshipful.
Then there's tithing mentioned - Abraham to Melchizidek (Gen 14:20) and Jacob's promise to God (Gen 28:22).
Perhaps circumcision might also have been considered an act of `worship' since it showed submissiveness and obedience to God (Gen 17:10-12; 21:4). This would be no different than today, since we worship
God with our entire being (See Rom. 12:1,2).
4) Who was the `spiritual leader' during this time period?
The father of the family. He was the teacher (Gen 18:19) (of Abraham). He was the priest (Job 1:5), as Job offered burnt offerings for all of his family. He was responsible for his family's (household's) actions toward God.
5) What is this era of time often called? Do you know why?
Patriarchal Age - Fathers led (God led through fathers)
