WORSHIP
I. What Is Worship
1) What first comes to mind when you first hear the word `worship'?
For most, worship means going to church on Sunday morning.
For others, it might mean a quiet serious time, or bowing before God, a prayerful time.
2) Define `worship' according to worldly understanding?
Have you ever heard someone say, "I don't need to go to church to worship God. I can worship Him here at home." Or "You worship God from your heart, it doesn't matter how." Or someone may say, "As long as you believe, you really don't need to worship God."
3) Now define `worship' Scripturally.
There are eight different Greek words translated worship or worshipping in the New Testament alone.
proskuneo- do reverence to, an act of homage or reverence to God, to man (Mt. 18:26), to the Dragon (Rev 13:4), to Christ (Mt 2:2), to the Beast (Rev. 13:4), to the image of the Beast (Rev 13:15), to demons (Rev 9:20), to idols (Acts 7:43)
sebomai- to revere, stress the feeling of awe or devotion is used of worship to God (Mt 15:9) a goddess (Acts 19:27)

sebasma - denotes an object of worship (God or idols)
(2Thes. 2:4)
ethelothreskeia - voluntarily adopted worship (Col 2:23), not imposed by others
theskeia - (Col 2:18) religion, ceremonial service of religion
(above is from KJV)
(4) threskeia - 3 (religion), 1(worship)
(59) proskuneo - 51 (worship), 8 (bow down)
(12) sebo - 1 (devout), 3 (God fearing), 8 (worship)

sebasma - 2 (object of worship)
latreia - 2 (divine worship), 2 (service), 1 (service of worship)
latreuo - 18 (serve), 3 (worship)
(NOTE: ethelothreskeia is translated `self-made religion' in the NASB)
(NOTE: For simplification purposes, if the Greek word was translated in various forms of a word (i.e. worship, worships, worshiped, etc.) it is only listed in one form above.)
In the Old Testament (NASB) there are 4 words translated `worship'
mishmereth - `guard, watch, charge, function'
(78 times) 1 (allegiance), 27 (charge), 15 (duties), 2 (duty), (5) guard, 7 (keep), 8 (obligation), 1 (office), 3 (post), 1 (safe), 3 (service), 4 (watch), 1 (worship)

SUMMARY: In the Old Testament, there are 4 words translated `worship', the most frequent being "shachah" which means `to bow down'. In the New Testament, there are 8 words translated `worship' (in KJV), most often being proskuneo which is always translated either worship or to bow down. It's obvious from looking at both the Hebrew and Greek words for worship, that `to bow down', `reverence', `service', `devotion', are all words which describe Scriptural worship!
4) How frequently do we find this word in the Bible?
OT - 110 NT - 69 179 - NASB 180 - KJV
(in various tenses)
5) All people worshiped God in Biblical times. True or False
Of course not! There were many who were not even aware of the One true God. Just look at Acts 17:22, 23.
6) Do all people worship Him today "in their own way"?
You're right. Another silly question. Most people don't worship God in any way at all. And of those who attempt to worship Him, the majority do just exactly that; worship Him "their own way" not His way. That's one reason for this lesson. I'll try not to ask any more dumb questions.
7) After studying this lesson, is your answer to question #1 any different?
Worship should mean a reverent, humble time of praise and service to God. If we aren't bowing down physically, our attitude should be one of humility, at least on our knees in our mind.
